Domestic Students

You may be asking yourself, what “domestic students” mean? Well, usually it means domestic students, i.e. those who are regular Japanese students and have never lived abroad or are not bilingual. Of course this varies depending on the school but domestic students often take the same standard classes and do not have special English classes.

So why is it a category here? Students vary greatly in regards to motivation and academic levels but the one thing they have in common is that they are all required to study English at school. Of course being required to study English does not necessarily mean they are motivated to study! Starting teaching from scratch is a rewarding process and watching the progress of students through Junior and Senior High school is a draw for many teachers. Using your ESL skills you can really communicate with students and feel like you are teaching them something they will use in their future.

Some regular schools sometimes also have subject classes in English so you can combine subject and ESL teaching techniques. Some schools even have a special “International Course” and students who have a special interest in English will be a part of. These courses are only found in private schools.

If you like a challenge and enjoy watching your student’s progress domestic students could be for you! If however you are a qualified teacher but not necessarily ESL why not have a look at International/Returnee students?

International / Returnee Students

Most people probably think of International School when they look at the title of this page. Well, there are of course international schools in Japan but unless your qualifications are extremely high and you are willing and able to fight the fierce competition, it can be extremely difficult to get one of the rare positions that open up.

Recently within Japan there has been an increase in “returnee” students, students that have lived and been educated abroad (not exclusively in English speaking countries). With this rise in returnee students there has been a rise in specialist courses and classes to cater for them.

Students all have individual requirements different from regular Japanese students so even though they attend a regular Japanese school they are sometime offered special classes. These students often need specialized English classes or prefer to have schooling using the medium of English, therefore creating unique opportunities for qualified teachers who want to use their ESL techniques as well as subject teacher training.

If you are looking for opportunities to teach high level students or a different kind of position to ordinary Oral communication classes then International or returnee students could be what you are looking for. It can also be a great stepping stone to those coveted International School positions, register and come and have a chat with us for more.
